Retirement Planning Beyond the Money

Retirement Planning Beyond the Money

Do you remember when you were a kid and people would ask you what you wanted to do when you grew up?

Well here’s something slightly familiar but at a totally different time of your life.

What do you plan on doing in retirement?

Chances are you’ve been planning for retirement financially, but have you thought about what you will actually do once you retire?

Many people start their retirement off with a bang – travelling to the places they have always wanted to go, visiting people they haven’t seen in a while, slowing down and just doing what they want to do.

But after a while they may get bored. And that is not a good thing.

Not having enough structure or purpose in your life is really not good for either your physical or mental well being.

In the following video by CNN, they share the results from a Harvard Study that found that taking it too easy in retirement is not necessarily a good thing – especially if there is nothing meaningful in your life to fill your days.

Here are some of highlights of the tips they shared for a healthy and happy retirement;

  • Figure out how you will structure your days in retirement. Volunteer, second careers and hobbies are all things to consider
  • Take your retirement for a test drive. To see if you are really ready for retirement, if possible take your retirement life for a test drive. Take a long vacation or sabbatical to find out what you would enjoy in retirement
  • Assess your personal values. Take some time and think about what is important and fulfilling to you and how you could do that in retirement.
  • Maintain your health. As one of the people in the video said, “You can have all the money in the world but if you don’t have your health, you have nothing.”
