Launching My Legacy – Part 2

Launching My Legacy – Part 2

By Richard Weijo

I knew that I could not retire without having a plan in place. So I leveraged my previous business experience and decided to create a personal renewal plan. It was to be a one-page sheet that would have my mission, values, goals and a high level three-to-five year plan on what I wanted to achieve in retirement.

I must have iterated through at least 25 drafts of this one page plan. I found that this exercise really helped to clarify what was important to me.  Forcing the plan to be only one-page kept this activity very manageable and focused.  And it’s very fulfilling to get that first draft of your renewal plan on paper.  The edits for the second draft are much easier; and each subsequent draft just gets easier and easier and easier.

Listed below is my current mission, values and goals (I will spare you the details in the three-to-five year plan).  This pretty much what I walked into retirement with.

Create an enriching, vital renewal experience for the rest of my life.  Design a colorful collage of activities.  Continually participate in two or three meaningful pursuits, changing the palate of activities to capture new experiences.  Continue to make the world a better place to live.

  • Act like a college student, be open, spontaneous and young in attitude
  • Mix in lots of fun & family
  • Always plan to do something different.  Variety is the spice to life
  • Combine and synergize living, working & playing
  • The second act is always the best.  The finale can wait

  • Travel to a new place at least every few years.   Enjoy returning to previously visited places.  However, be challenged to discover the new and different.
  • Continue as a change agent.  Influence through words and ideas, creatively leveraging my analytic, marketing, writing & investment skill sets.
  • Capitalize on my passions in finance & investing.
  • Participate in community building activities.
  • Stay healthy through good nutrition and physical activity.
  • Leave a meaningful legacy.

My renewal started in a very traditional way.  Sharon and I vacationed in Hawaii for two weeks, with a plan a few months later to tour Australia for almost a month.

But then things changed in an unexpected direction…
