Is Aging Really About Developing Your Character?

Is Aging Really About Developing Your Character?

I recently watched a YouTube video clip of an interview by TVO with an American psychologist named James Hillman that I thought was quite interesting.

In this clip, Mr. Hillman challenged some of our current societal views of aging and suggested that aging is in fact not an accident, it is actually the opportunity for us to develop our character.

Some of his other thoughts and comments regarding aging were;

  • On cosmetic surgery and how society celebrates someone who looks good for their age if they remain young looking;
    • Mr. Hillman suggests that we are we are actually harming society by not having faces that show life as it is actually experienced without alteration and as a result depriving society of our elders, genuineness and authenticity
  • About the physical changes of aging;
    • He believes that physical deterioration of aging is actually providing us with the opportunity to further form our character

Here is the video clip… what do you think?
