Home Is Where Your Heart Really Is

Home Is Where Your Heart Really Is

My husband and I have found that the last ten years or so has just flown by.

Having been so busy with our kids and their activities plus our own careers and lives, we just happened to poke our heads up and realized that we are actually getting closer and closer to the retirement goal line and haven’t really thought too much about where we plan to live in retirement.Holiday

We have two children – one is away at school the other one is at home with us while attending university.

The one thing that my husband and I both agree on is that we would still like to maintain a home base for our family for holidays and vacations until our kids have established their own places to call home.

As well, if statistics are any indication, our kids might be living with us longer anyways.

Statistics Canada reported that four million people aged 20 to 29 in Canada or 44 per cent are living with their parents.  With this in mind, I think we will be keeping our family home for a few years longer and it looks like there are others similar to ourselves that are also thinking the same thing.

In an article published by Neilsen, they stated that most baby boomers are not planning on downsizing. In fact nearly two-thirds of Boomers have no plans to move at all.

At any rate, right now and into the near future it doesn’t seem like we are going to have a mass exodus of Boomers selling their homes and flocking into condominiums or leaving for other exotic places to live as some may have initially predicted.

So wherever my husband and I end up living in retirement, the one thing I know for sure is that home is truly where the heart is and as long as we have family and friends around us and things to keep us active and engaged – it really doesn’t matter too much to me as to where we end up living.

I think our ultimate goal in retirement is to do just that anyways – keep on living – and that doesn’t necessarily have a specific postal code.
