Growing More Than Just Vegetables

Spring is now in full swing!

Even though COVID-19 has made our lead up to spring this year a very different experience, it’s still nice to appreciate the warmer weather and the chance to go outside (while safely distancing of course).

It’s also the time of year that we start to take a good look at our gardens.

A few years back, we planted a small vegetable garden.  Every year we now look forward to being able to cut some fresh herbs or eat some home grown vegetables directly from our own backyard and this year is no exception.

Have you ever considered growing your own vegetables?  

Beyond fresh vegetables just being good for your waistline and your health, there are some other benefits to growing your own vegetables. Plus with the challenges now in shopping, there is even a bigger benefit to thinking about growing your own. Here are just a few of them;

You can grow your own organic vegetables.

When you grow your own vegetables, you know exactly what was used and what wasn’t used to grow them.

Your vegetables will have higher nutritional value.

Vegetables that are destined for your super market are often picked earlier so that they can survive the packaging, storing and transportation.  Because you are eating your vegetables directly from your garden they are able to retain more of their nutritional value.

You can save some money.

Once you have made the initial financial outlay to create your garden, it is not costly to maintain and you easily recover your costs through the money that you will save in not buying produce at the grocery store.

Homegrown vegetables taste better.

If you have never eaten a tomato directly from the vine – you don’t know what you are missing!  No flavour is lost during the transportation from your garden to your plate.

It’s Easy.

Sure there is some time involved to figure out where to set up your garden, what you want to plant and then getting it planted but once that’s done, just some simple weeding and watering is usually all you need to do.  You can even grow vegetables in containers.

Gardening burns calories.

When you spend time gardening – it’s actually a physical activity that burns calories.  Depending on your weight you can burn from 200 to 500 calories per hour.

Growing your own food can be rewarding.

There is something very satisfying about growing something that you can eat.  Maybe it’s linked back to our hunter and gatherer days or something.

It’s good for the environment.

There are no transportation costs and if you grow them organically no use of pesticides.
