Enough of the Generation Stereotypes Please!

Enough of the Generation Stereotypes Please!

I personally think that stereotypes are dangerous.

I believe that each person is unique and has their own strengths and weaknesses.

The idea of rolling whole groups of people together and then summarizing their behaviour up in a few shared attitudes and traits can be limiting for our thinking as a society, damage the relationships that we have with each other as well as even short circuit an individual’s potential.

You may be wondering what brought this little rant on.

Lately I have run across a number of articles about different generations and all the stereotypical behaviours that they are tagged with.

I agree that there may be shared interests and even similar philosophies within each different generation given that these groups possibly shared common life experiences.

But what I object to is the broad brush strokes that comes with stereotypes. To believe that a whole generation all have the same attitudes and will behave and act a certain way is extremely short sighted.

Maybe we should take the time to get to know a person first and recognize their unique and different qualities and talents rather than presuming we know everything about them based on the year they were born.

Maybe then, we will actually see and appreciate each other for who we really are – individuals – and not just label each other as being only part of a generational stereotype.
