Discovering the Secrets to a Long Life

Discovering the Secrets to a Long Life

By Susan Williams

In the Italian village of Acciaroli they have something quite unusual happening.

In this town, 1 out over every 10 residents is more than 100 years old.

What is the secret to their longevity?

Well, scientists have been studying this to see what we can learn from them.

In the following video from CNN, they explore what they discovered;

Here are some of the highlights;

The Mediterranean Diet

It was in the villages along this coastline that the American nutritionist Ancel Keys┬ádiscovered the Mediterranean diet. Fresh herbs, vegetables, fruit and fish – all locally sourced. As one of the villagers said, “we eat natural things… things that we grow, we know what’s there“.

The researchers are also very interested in the herb rosemary. They believe that it may help with circulation to the brain and could possibly also help explain why the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease is rare in the village.

Lifestyle

Diet may be a major contributor to the lengthy longevity but there are also other factors to be considered. Living by the sea, no pollution, great weather and almost no stress of what may be experienced in typical modern life.

Love

Could love also possibly contribute to longevity? Love is something that is extremely difficult to measure and quantify – but maybe having someone to love and someone who loves you might just make a difference to how long you live – and probably the quality of your life too.
