DON’T Take a Seat!

How much time do you spend sitting each day? 

If you add up the time you sit in your car, sit at a desk or in front of a computer or television – it is probably a great deal of time.  According to the Mayo Clinic, 50 to 70 percent of people spend six or more hours sitting a day.

Recently there have been a number of articles in the media about the dangers of sitting for too long.  Articles published on the health hazards of sitting to the increased risks that you health will suffer as a result of sitting all day are just some recent examples.

What is even more concerning is that in two recently published studies, they identified that there are significant health risks for both older men and women from sitting too much.

In one study focused specifically on men between the ages of 45 and 69, the research found that men who were more sedentary outside of work hours had a higher risk of heart failure. In another study of older women between the ages of 50 and 69, it was discovered that women who had a sedentary lifestyle had an increased risk of an early death than those that who did not.

So, what does all this research tell us? 

It’s actually pretty simple – we have to get up out of chairs and get moving! 

If you work all day at a desk or spend hours in front of a computer or TV here are a couple of suggestions on what you can do;

So stand during your lunch, go for a walk for your meetings, stand up when you are on the phone or pace around the room when watching TV – anything that will keep you moving throughout your day.
